Can't Find a Job? Start Your Own Business!

Students are finding that many of the jobs they could count on in the past are being filled with older, more experienced workers. If the current job market has you looking for different ways to make money, consider starting your own business.

The business world is filled with stories of successful young entrepreneurs. Companies like Facebook, Apple and Google were started by people under 25 years old! How do you start a business? It’s all about a good idea.

Try these four tips for inspiration:

  1. Provide a Helpful Service. Think about the things people don’t like to do, or don’t have time to do for themselves. Can you help them? Jobs like mowing the lawn or housecleaning are always popular. Make a list of how people can use your help.

  2. Do Something That Interests You. If you like children, consider babysitting. If you’re a dog lover, you might want to start a dog grooming company. Write down your hobbies and interests, and see if that sparks an idea.

  3. Make It Better. Cold Stone Creamery made ice cream better by adding toppings like candy bars, cookie dough and birthday cake. It was a simple idea that is now worth millions of dollars. Is there anything you can improve? Make a list and get as crazy as possible. Sometimes the most outrageous ideas are the real winners.

  4. Create Something. Do you like to write songs? Start a band and sell your music. If you’re good at arts & crafts, sell your work. Websites like mysongstore.com and etsy.com make it easy for artists to sell their creations and make money doing it.
