Safe Shopping on the Web

It’s easier than ever to buy concert tickets, clothes, music, movies and books online. Although most Internet transactions are safe, there are a few simple steps you can take to make buying online even more secure.

Use a secure browser. Your browser should comply with industry security standards, such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). When buying something online always look for secure pages with an “s” after the “http” in the web address of the purchase page.

Shop with companies you know. Anyone can set up shop online under almost any name. Shop with known, reputable retailers. Also, determine the company’s refund and return policies. These should be posted on the company’s Web site.

Keep your password(s) secret. Never share your password! Avoid using simple passwords that can be easily guessed, such as your birth date.

Keep a record. Keep a record of your online transactions, including any order numbers, confirmation or receipt numbers, price, quantity and transaction date.
