Simple Steps to Debit Card Safety

Millions of Americans use ATM/debit cards everyday to make purchases. While a majority of these transactions are completed without any problems, it’s smart to protect your debit card and PIN to help reduce your risk of fraud.

Take a look at the following tips to help keep your debit card safe.

• When using an ATM terminal or point-of-sale terminal, use your hand or body to shield the pin pad to prevent others from seeing you enter your PIN.

• If your card is lost, stolen or retained by an ATM, notify your credit union immediately.

• Check your statements each month and look for any errors or suspicious activity. Immediately report any errors to your credit union.

• If fraudulent charges are made on your account, you have 60 days after the statement date to report the activity. After 60 days, your credit union, or any other financial institution, will not be able to pursue the dispute or reimburse your losses.

• When shopping online, make sure the merchant has a secure server before providing your debit card number.
